 Help For Families in Armenia

Through our partners, we work in the north of the country where unemployment and poverty have persisted for decades. War and conflict with neighbouring countries have also taken their toll.

Around 70% of men still travel to Russia to find good jobs and are often away from home for long periods of time.   Women are keen better to provide for themselves and their families, and income generation programmes have been very popular.

What We Have Been Up To In Armenia

Armenia Borehole Project

The well from our Armenia borehole has proved to be a fantastic source of water for many local families.  Our principal partner in Armenia reports that they started harvest in August 2023. It’s mainly garlic, peas and beans with possibly potatoes to follow later. The harvest has been good, thanks largely to the well for which the local families are extremely thankful.

Global Hope in Action funded the drilling of the borehole for water in March/April 2023. With the land still too hard to drill, our local community partners got the community behind them with the project and secured a local labour force and a drilling contractor. They had to drill to 28-30 metres.  The water is good quality and in plentiful supply.

Summer Camps

Global Hope in Action recently provided funding towards children’s summer holiday camps, which have proved very popular.

Self-Supporting Communities

One urgent need is for rural communities to make more productive use of their land to help feed themselves and provide local employment. Much still needs to be done to make communities more self-supporting.

Sewing

A sewing machine training programme has proved highly successful with many trainees finding local jobs as machinists, starting up a business on their own or passing their skills on to others.

Family Support

Other family support programmes include parenting courses mainly for women and children’s holiday clubs.  Motivating young people is also vital, and guitar lessons have recently been started for teenagers.

Armenia gained its independence from the USSR in 1991, but many parts of the country still struggle with unemployment and social deprivation.  In the north, up to 70% of men still travel to Russia to find decent work, leaving their families for weeks or months at a time.

We work through our partners in the northern region of Spitak, supporting programmes mainly aimed at helping women and their families. These have included income generation projects, such as sewing training workshops, and family initiatives such as parenting courses and youth programmes.

The conflict in Ukraine has meant higher commodity prices for Armenia than elsewhere and inflation has risen rapidly, making it even harder for families to make ends meet.

A key opportunity now is to make better use of the land available, making use of modern farming techniques, provide more locally sourced food and jobs.

We plan to support training in crop production for unemployed men and women in late 2022/early 2023 in time for the start of the 2023 season.  Meanwhile, we are supporting family programmes such as parenting courses and children’s holiday camps sponsored by the local church.
