SEED PROJECTS IN SRI LANKA

In February 2023 Global Hope in Action went to Sri Lanka to do a Community Health Education (CHE) training.

One of the things participants are encouraged to do post-training is a seed project.  A seed project, which is the first project we do upon entering the community, should be:

- small scale

- high visibility

- use local resources

- defined by the community

- involve the community

- create a vision for long term development

- build relationships

- done in 1-2 days

- low cost

We trained 8 districts across Sri Lanka.

Seed Project in Bandarawela, Sri Lanka

Feedback from the project in Bandarawela:

  1. Project initiated and defined by local community and Community Health Education (CHE) trainers
  2. CHE trainers went to the local school, talked to the school principal (person of peace) and got to know the needs of the community.
  3. Principal told the CHE trainers that there is a slope where children mostly walk...they tend to slip and fall so they asked how to repair it.
  4. Participants- school principal, students and CHE trainers.
  5. Resources- they built it with local resources they obtained from the school premises.
  6. Food and celebration - the school helped provide food and snacks to thank those who worked on the project.
  7. Through this project the students got the following benefits:

     • children can walk without fear

     • students can freely play

     • the place is now a clean and enjoyable environment

  • the school Principal and children are now so happy and enthusiastic.
  • the school children played a part in making this project work.
