What We Have Been Up To In Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a land-locked country of around 20 million people located in the Sahel region of West Africa. Burkina is French-speaking and is comprised of 66 different ethnic groups.

Burkina faces many challenges with 40% of people living below the poverty line and is hugely reliant on agriculture. It continues to remain one of the poorest countries in the world with only about 29% of Burkina's primary school-age children receiving a basic education. In recent years, the country has been subject to military coups as well as a rise in terrorist attacks.

In 2012, we initiated a community-based programme in a village 200 km outside of the capital, Ouagadougou. Five years later the village became a model of sustainability for the region.

During this period, the community saw health improve and malaria rates drop, new agricultural crops were planted and harvested as well as micro-enterprise programmes were launched. All of this was due to the active participation of the village which identified, prioritised and who had a passionate desire to solve its own issues.

As an organisation, our desire is to see villages and communities such as these self-replicate across Burkina Faso.
